The Fife Trojans were ready for Steilacoom’s stellar running back, Jordan Flynn. They knew they would have to stop him to continue their three-game winning streak and make a definitive statement in the Nisqually Olympic League.
“They were well-balanced. We knew what to expect. We knew going in we would have to be ready for Jordan Flynn,” said Fife coach Kent Nevin the day after the game. “And we did a pretty good job.”
Actually the Trojans did a very good job on Jordan. He came into the game averaging 5.83 yards per carry. Fife held him to 56 yards on 19 carries (2.95 yards per carry), his longest run being 10 yards.
The problem was the Sentinels have another back named Jesse Newhouse who, while the Trojans were paying such close attention to Flynn, blistered them for 148 yards on 18 carries, including a 37-yarder, and scored four touchdowns to key a 35-24 victory.
“Newhouse played a great game,” said Nevin.
Steilacoom emerged from the game still undefeated at 5-0, while Fife fell to 3-2.
Steilacoom ended up with 424 yards, 318 of that on the ground.
In addition to giving up five touchdowns, the Trojans turned the ball over five times, with three interceptions and two fumbles.
“That was the difference in the game. We obviously have to do a much better job of taking care of the football. You just can’t do that and win football games,” said Nevin.
The Sentinels took a 14-0 lead after taking the ball 97 yards on 19 plays and consuming more than nine minutes. The Trojans struck back with two quick scores and trailed by just two points, 14-12, at the half.
The Trojans took the lead in the third quarter, 18-14.
But it was short-lived. The Sentinels regained command and didn’t let go, scoring the next three touchdowns in the game on runs of 37, 36, and four yards.
Alex Rohrer led the Trojans with 112 yards on the ground in six attempts and ran and passed for a score. Dustin Yarrington started the scoring for the Trojans with an eight-yard touchdown catch. Rohrer scored on a 15-yard run. Tyler Richards scored on a five-yard carry. Jordan McDaniel scored on a two-yard run.
The Trojans, who were playing without injured senior leader Josh Porter, know the turnovers cost them the game.
“Too many mistakes,” said senior wide receiver Yarrington. “We’ll just get back to work and get ready for the next one.”
The Trojans travel to Klahowya Oct. 10 to play an Eagles team that lost to Sequim, 36-19.
