FIFE HIGH WAS RECOGNIZED AS KING 5 TELEVISION’S “BEST OF WESTERN WASHINGTON” VIEWERS’ POLL WINNER AS FIRST-PLACE SCHOOL FOR “BEST SCHOOL WITH THE MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT.”

For the second year in a row, Fife High School is being recognized with first-place honors as “Best School with the Most Spirit in Western Washington” in KING 5 television’s “Best of Western Washington” 2009 viewers’ poll.

Fife High School Principal Mark Knight is proud his Trojans were able to claim this top status again.

“I think it’s a neat honor for us and the way we do things at this school,” Knight said. “It’s a great tribute to our students and the staff who work hard and participate in school activities.”

Although this is a reader-voted competition, Knight said his school did not do much campaigning for the title.

“We put a notice on our school website, but that’s about it.”

There are no secrets or strategies the students or staff at Fife High use to maintain the title of “most spirited,” Knight explains. However, he does offer up a couple of annual events that have helped propel the school into this category.

“I think we do some things here differently from others schools,” he noted. “We have some activities, for example, the ‘Cabbage Patch Olympics’ in the fall, which is sort of like a field day event that gets the students energized and motivated.”

Homecoming is another big event that draws his students and the

community together

under the banner of school spirit.

“We get a pretty good turnout (of alumni) every year,” Knight said.

He commends the school’s booster club for honoring those returning alumni with gifts and recognition each year.

“It just keeps people remembering that school spirit is impor-

tant,” Knight commented.

The thing that makes winning this honor for the second year significant is the fact that Fife High School is much smaller than their neighboring institutions. The school has just more than 800 students between grades 10-12.

“We are on the smaller side compared to the districts around us,” Knight said. “It’s neat that we’re able to pick up this honor. I think we’ve always had a fairly spirited group at this school every year.”
